IATSE 212 2024 A REMARKABLE YEAR IN REVIEW 
2024 was the most remarkable year in Local 212's 114-year history. Among the historic achievements, Local 212 opened a new training facility and office building, hosted an International Board Meeting and signed a historic Agreement with Netflix. On top of that we saw a number of new faces come to join the Local 212 staff team. To say it was an eventful year would be an understatement.

January Trade Mission to Los Angeles 
President Petti with Michael Dunphy -Teamsters 362, Jyoti Gondek -Mayor of Calgary, Luke Azevedo -Calgary Film Commission, Tina Alford -ACTRA Alberta and Lisa Pearl-Whitten -DGC-ADC.
The Year began with a slow start in terms of work but a very successful trade mission to Los Angeles
brought the optimism of many leads and follow-ups that would help to bring a busy summer, despite an ongoing global production slowdown.
The Last of Us picks up 8 Emmy Awards
2024 got off to a very optimistic start with 8 Emmy Wins for "The Last of Us" including a win for Local 212 Sound Mixer, Michael Playfair. Other Local 212 Nominees included Chris Glimsdale and Penny Thompson (Hair), Paul Healy (Set Decorator), Rebecca Toon and Michelle Carr (Costumes). It was a good year for Emmy Nominations with a total of 31 for "The Last of Us", "Prey", and "Fraggle Rock" combined!
In February Local 212 supports Trans Youth Rights 
Local 212 Members were out in full force demonstrating their support for Trans youth who were currently being marginalized by provincial legislation.
Construction on the Local 212 training complex continued 
After Breaking Ground in 2023, the foundations of the building with steel Frame began to take shape. In February, work on the building's interior continued.
In March, we signed a first of its kind, three year agreement with Netflix
Historic Signing!

Local 212 became the first IATSE Local to sign a term agreement directly with Netflix. The agreement preserves the area standards and sets a new bar for motion picture labour agreements in Alberta.Highlights of the deal include: No discounting of rates, an 11-Day automatic upgrade from daily to weekly employee status, order of hire language, Google Maps, time-based Travel Zone, 54 Hour Turn Around preserved with extensions for long days of work. Reconciliation Diversity Equity and Inclusion Language.
In April Production Volumes increased after a year of slowdowns
Local 212's "Mixer Mike", Mike Markiw, working on location for high budget Netflix series "The Abandons".
Local 212 Hosted the General Executive Board Meeting of IATSE
Host Local reports to the IA
Motion Picture BA, Alex Free and Stage BA, Rebecca Solly at the IATSE General Executive Board Meeting to report on Local 212's New Building and Netflix Agreement. Many Members stepped up to volunteer to represent our local as Sargent's at Arms and hosts.
Motion Picture President's Meeting in Calgary
Presidents of 15 Motion Picture IATSE Locals held an informal meeting in Calgary during the GEB meetings in July.
Local 212 Supports Young Workers Conference hosted by the IATSE 
Prior to the General Executive Board Meeting, Local 212 hosted the International Young Worker's conference in the Westin Hotel in Calgary. Over 100 delegates attended seminars and social functions promoting strength and unity for young workers within the IATSE family.
New Labour Relations Team in PlaceIn June, Local 212 welcomed new members to its labour relations team in the summer. Joining President Petti, are Rebecca Solly -Stage Business Agent, Lee Proudlock, Union Rep. and Alex Free, Motion Picture Business Agent.

Motion Picture BA, Tom Benz, passes away
On September 16th, our Motion Picture Business Agent of nine years, Tom Benz, Passed away after a lengthy illness. Tom left a legacy of achievements after his impressive career in theindustry. Click here to read his obituary. Alex Free was promoted from Union Representative to Moton Picture BA to fill the vacancy.
